Mai, aged 8
Mai is eight years old girl, from a poor village of Que Son district in the Central Vietnam. Her father died away in 2009 due to HIV/AIDS. Her farther passed away, and left Mai, her mother and her brother with HIV in their blood. After Mai’s farther death, her grandparents did not want Mai’s family to stay with them. Since then, they had to move to in a temporary small house. One year later, they got support from the oversea Vietnamese person to build a small house. To get income, Mai’s mother grows vegetables, raises chicken coop and does casual work for the neighbors. Mai’s mother has to work terribly hard, but couldn’t get enough for her three children. In addition, she has to worry and take care of Mai and her brothers who often get sick.
Mai got some chances to enjoy the summer trip, mid-auturm festival, Tet event, etc, organized by VNHIP. She became more confident, having dream and had more contacts with other children. Mai is going the primary school at grade 3 at local primary school. Her mother is so proud of that Thuan is always among top excellent students. With support from Mr. Kees Van Den Berk, the donor of VNHIP, Thuan’s mother extended the chicken raising plan to increase her income. With this income generation activity, she could get about 1.500.000 VND a month. It is more important that she feel confident to do her business and she got saving for emergency cases. With support from Ms. Sagen Wilk, former volunteer of VNHIP, Thuan received 40 USD a month for food. Via VNHIP, the Children Education Foundation in Hoi An city provides a yearly scholarship for Mai’s schooling.
